Amazon has announced that it will discontinue its Amazon Appstore on Android devices starting August 20, 2025. After that date, Android users will not be able to install new apps or update existing ones through the store, or make in-app purchases.
While Amazon has not officially disclosed the detailed reasons for closing the Appstore for Android, experts attribute the decision to several factors:
Decreased relevance: Since its launch in 2011, the Amazon Appstore has served as an alternative to Google Play. However, in 2025, users have access to a variety of other app stores, such as the Samsung Galaxy Store, Huawei AppGallery, and Xiaomi GetApps, reducing the need to use the Amazon Appstore.
Changes in Amazon's strategy: The company is focusing its efforts on its own devices and services, such as the Fire TV and Fire Tablet, where the Appstore will continue to function.
Discontinuation of Support: As of August 20, 2025, the Amazon Appstore will no longer be available on Android devices. Apps downloaded through this store may no longer function, as Amazon does not guarantee that they will function after this date.
Amazon Coins: The Amazon Coins virtual currency program will also be discontinued. As of February 20, 2025, users will not be able to purchase new coins, and any remaining coins must be used by August 20. Unused funds will be refunded to users.
Amazon Devices: On Amazon devices such as Fire TV and Fire Tablet, the Appstore will continue to function, and users will be able to continue installing and updating apps.
Switching to Alternative Stores: Consider using other app stores such as Google Play, Samsung Galaxy Store, or Huawei AppGallery, depending on your device.
Saving Data: If you use apps downloaded through the Amazon Appstore, make sure to save your data and settings to avoid losing information when the store closes.
Use of Amazon Coins: Try to use all your Amazon Coins before August 20, 2025 to avoid having to pay back.
This decision by Amazon reflects the company's shift in focus to developing its own devices and services, as well as adapting to the changing mobile app market.
